Some speakers make noise. JBL Summit Series speakers make you feel like you’re in the room.

JBL’s return to the pinnacle of loudspeaker design with the Summit Series is one of the most exciting moments in high-end audio in recent memory. These are not consumer speakers with a famous name on the cabinet. They’re the direct descendants of the studio monitors used to mix and master your favorite recordings in top studios around the world — refined and reimagined specifically for home listening.

The Summit Series delivers a sense of scale, dynamics, and sheer visceral presence that few competitors can touch at any price. When a drum hits or an orchestra swells, you don’t just hear it. You feel it in your chest. That experience — that physical reminder of why live music moves us — is extraordinarily rare in a home loudspeaker, and it’s exactly what JBL brings.

What makes the Summit Series genuinely special is the combination of JBL’s legendary high-efficiency compression driver technology with state-of-the-art materials and computer-optimized cabinet designs. The result is a speaker that’s both incredibly efficient — filling even very large rooms with effortless ease — and remarkably refined, revealing subtle musical details that lesser speakers simply miss. Power and finesse, together. That combination is exceedingly rare.

They’ve quickly become one of our most talked-about and most-requested demonstrations at the Seattle Experience Center. If you love music with energy, scale, and visceral impact — rock, jazz, orchestral, film scores — these speakers deliver an experience that’s genuinely hard to find anywhere else.

Come hear the JBL Summit Series. Our team will demonstrate exactly what these remarkable speakers do best.

A History of Audio Excellence

1946

The Beginning

JBL was established in 1946 by James Bullough Lansing, who had already made a name for himself in cinema and professional audio with Altec Lansing. Determined to push speaker design further, Lansing formed his own company, James B. Lansing Sound, Inc., laying the foundation for a brand that would become synonymous with precision, innovation, and reliability in both professional and consumer audio. This moment marked the beginning of an 80-year journey that would change how the world listens to music.

1950-1960

The Paragon and studio monitors

In the decades following its founding, JBL quickly became recognized for groundbreaking designs that bridged professional and home listening. The release of the JBL Paragon in 1957, a sculptural stereo loudspeaker, combined engineering brilliance with aesthetic artistry. At the same time, JBL monitors like the 4310 became staples in recording studios, helping to define the sound of modern records. By the 1960s, JBL was no longer just an audio manufacturer — it was shaping the very way music was recorded and heard.

1969

The Becoming of Harman

JBL’s acquisition by Harman International Industries in 1969 propelled the brand into a new era of global growth. With Harman’s backing, JBL had the resources to scale manufacturing, invest heavily in research and development, and expand its presence worldwide. This milestone ensured JBL would remain competitive and innovative, not only in consumer hi-fi but also in professional cinema, live sound, and studio markets. Under Harman, JBL’s reputation as both a professional and lifestyle audio leader became firmly established.

1970's

The Rise of Home Loudspeakers

The 1970s and 1980s were transformative decades for JBL’s consumer offerings. The release of the L-Series, especially the L-100, introduced millions of listeners to the power and clarity of JBL engineering in their own homes. These speakers became iconic, gracing living rooms, dorm rooms, and listening spaces around the world. JBL demonstrated that their professional audio expertise could translate beautifully into home hi-fi, forever changing the expectations of what consumer loudspeakers could deliver.

1980

Then came Project

As JBL’s reputation grew, so did its ambition. The brand introduced its elite “Project” loudspeakers, designs that pushed every boundary of acoustic science and craftsmanship. Models like the Everest and K2 became statements of JBL’s highest engineering ideals, integrating advanced horn technology, new materials, and bold cabinet design. These speakers were not mass-market products but aspirational works of art that established JBL as a benchmark in ultra high-end loudspeakers.

2025

Unveiling the Summit Series

At High End Munich 2025, JBL announced the expansion of its prestigious Summit Series with three all-new models — Makalu, Pumori, and Ama — joining Everest and K2. Inspired by Himalayan peaks, these loudspeakers embody JBL’s philosophy of combining advanced acoustic engineering with striking, sculptural design. With luxurious finishes, cutting-edge waveguides, IsoAcoustics isolation feet, and reference-level performance, the Summit Series represents the pinnacle of JBL’s nearly 80 years of innovation, delivering experiences that are both technically masterful and emotionally powerful.

2025

Definitive becomes the EXCLUSIVE Launch partner.

For U.S. listeners, this marks a rare opportunity to witness and audition JBL’s most exclusive loudspeakers at Definitive before anywhere else in the country.
