Experience is Everything, and That’s No Overstatement.

KEF's mission is to provide sound with minimal intervention, ensuring a seamless experience from treble to bass and beyond. They aim to enable listeners to close their eyes and fully immerse in the sound, transporting them mentally to the source. KEF believes that natural sound is paramount, and access to it should be a fundamental right, not a privilege.

At Definitive, we invite you to listen and believe in the technologies KEF has to offer.

A History of Audio Excellence

1961

The Beginning

KEF was founded and initially headquartered in a Nissen Hut at Kent Engineering & Foundry in Maidstone, Kent, UK. Cooke, a former BBC electrical engineer, was passionate about experimenting with new materials and technologies to reproduce recordings as naturally as the original performance.

1967

First Introductions

KEF introduced the B110 and T27 drivers, which were successfully used in the Cresta speaker and later chosen by the BBC for the LS3/5a monitor. This collaboration with the BBC provided valuable experience in working with tight acoustic tolerances for monitor loudspeakers.

1970

International Fame

KEF won its first Queen’s Award for Export Achievement, marking the company’s growing international recognition. In 1973, KEF became the first loudspeaker manufacturer to use computers in speaker design and measurement.

1988

First Patent

KEF introduced and patented the Uni-Q® driver, the world’s first truly coincident source speaker. This innovation expanded the optimal listening area, allowing everyone in a room to experience the same natural, detailed sound. The Uni-Q driver became the foundation of KEF's signature sound.

2005

Introducing ACE

KEF unveiled the ACE (Acoustic Compliance Enhancement) technology, which enabled bass performance comparable to a much larger speaker. ACE played a significant role in the development of the Muon loudspeakers, one of KEF's most groundbreaking designs.

2012

Bringing Wireless Home

To celebrate KEF’s 50th anniversary, the company released the LS50 speaker. Combining technological advancements with the original LS3/5a studio monitor concept, the LS50 brought high-quality sound into the living room, making it accessible to a broader audience.

2020

Innovation of the Year

KEF introduced Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT), which absorbs 99% of unwanted sound from the rear of the driver. MAT won the ‘Innovation of the Year’ award from What Hi-Fi? in 2020. This technology contributed to the development of the LS50 Collection and the LS60 Wireless speaker, KEF's first active floor-standing speaker, which celebrated KEF’s 60th anniversary. The LS60 combined KEF’s key technologies with digital conveniences, representing the future of high-fidelity sound.
