Description

Most phonostage designers put equalization in the analog signal path. That means passive networks, switch contacts, large reactive components, and the compromises that come with them. The Madison Phono takes a different approach: the analog stage amplifies linearly, with no EQ. The signal is then digitized at 32-bit/384kHz -- DXD mastering-studio resolution -- and equalization is handled in the digital domain with exceptional precision and repeatability. The analog amplification circuitry stays simpler and cleaner. The equalization stays accurate.

Three input architectures address three different cartridge types, each with dedicated circuitry matched to the electrical behavior of the transducer. The voltage-sensing input supports MM and high-impedance MC cartridges with automatic gain and loading, simplifying setup. The current-sensing input is designed for low-impedance MC cartridges and uses a true active transimpedance amplifier -- derived from CH Precision technology -- rather than the simple passive current-to-voltage conversion common in other designs. This reduces sensitivity to cable characteristics, loading interactions, and impedance variation. For DS Audio optical cartridges, a dedicated optical input stage operates in photoconductive mode with its own active transimpedance circuit, preserving the cartridge's speed, clarity, and low-level detail.

Outputs include stereo analog RCA for direct connection to a preamplifier or integrated amplifier, plus coaxial and optical S/PDIF for feeding a Madison Streamer or external DAC. The three input-stage modules are field-exchangeable if cartridge requirements change. Ethernet for firmware updates and remote control. CNC machined from solid aluminum. Compatible with the Madison Power S for a lower noise floor at the most sensitive point in the analog chain.
