Description

Every tonearm in the world has the same problem. As the stylus tracks the groove, it generates drag. That drag creates torque — oscillating forces that even the most expensive conventional bearings can only partially manage. The result is microscopic timing errors, scrubbing, a slight blurring of the signal that gets mistaken for the sound of vinyl itself. It isn't the sound of vinyl. It's the sound of the arm getting in the way.

The SUPATRAC Blackbird doesn't manage that problem. It eliminates it — and goes further. The Blackbird's patented SUPA (Sideways Uni-Pivot Arm) bearing pivots at a single contact point that directly opposes stylus drag instead of being deflected by it. When loud passages increase drag, the SUPA bearing converts that force into a slight downward torque — pressing the stylus into the groove at exactly the right moment. SUPATRAC calls it Torque-Reaction Assisted Contact (TRAC). What you hear is music that tracks louder passages without flinching, holds timing with mechanical certainty, and retrieves detail from the groove that conventional arms simply leave behind.

The Blackbird's arm tube is built like a structural element — two pultruded carbon fiber tubes bonded together, headshell reinforced with aluminum, cavity filled with damping foam, clamped to the thrust box with six M4 machine screws. It fits virtually any turntable: Rega, Linn, SME, Kuzma, Pro-Ject, Michell, Brinkmann, TW Acoustic, and more. A mass adaptor is included so it works with the full range of cartridges from high-compliance Shures to low-compliance Miyajima Monos. The Blackbird won The Absolute Sound's 2024 Golden Ear Award. It is currently on the floor at Definitive Audio on a Döhmann Helix. Come hear it.

FAQs

What is the warranty on SUPATRAC Products?

SUPATRAC tonearms are hand-crafted in the UK by a small team with exacting standards, and they stand behind their work. Warranty coverage is provided through Musical Surroundings, SUPATRAC's exclusive US distributor, and through Definitive Audio as an authorized dealer. Contact us directly with any questions about your arm — we'll make sure you're taken care of.

Which Tonearam is Right for My System?

Start with your turntable. If you're on a Rega-based deck, the Blackbird is your arm — the Nighthawk's larger 1" pillar isn't compatible with Rega-style mounts. For everything else (Linn, SME, Kuzma, Pro-Ject, and most others), both arms will fit. From there, it comes down to your cartridge and how far you want to push. The Blackbird is a stunning arm at any price and won The Absolute Sound's 2024 Golden Ear Award — it's the right choice for the vast majority of setups. The Nighthawk is for the listener who wants to go all the way: a heavier-duty pivot, larger pillar, and greater tracking authority that reveals the last bit of what's in your vinyl. Both are on the floor at Definitive. Come in and listen — that's the only answer that matters.

Do you accept trade-ins toward purchase?

Yes. Our Trade-In Trade-Up program allows you to trade your current tonearm toward a something from SUPATRAC. We assess trade-in value based on condition, brand, and current market — and we'll give you a straight answer. If you're moving from another reference-level table, the conversation is worth having. Contact us or stop by the Bellevue Experience Center to get started. Or submit your potential trade in gear here.
