dCS's first dedicated headphone amplifier — built not because headphone amplifiers needed another option, but because dCS wanted to hear what their Ring DAC sounded like driving headphones through a dedicated output stage rather than a speaker amplifier's headphone jack. The result is a Class A headphone amplifier with balanced and single-ended outputs, designed to extract everything the Lina DAC produces.
The output stage is specified for the full range of headphone impedances — from low-impedance planar magnetics to 600-ohm Sennheisers — without the output impedance mismatch that causes tonal shifts when most amplifiers encounter high-impedance loads. The power supply is separate from the signal path. The gain is switchable. It's been thought through.
Demo condition. Running the Lina Clock, Lina DAC, and Lina Headphone Amplifier as a complete stack is the reference implementation. Each piece improves on its own; together they represent a headphone system with no meaningful ceiling.
