One hundred years of tonearm design. Decades of refinements, exotic materials, precision engineering from some of the most respected names in audio. And still, the same fundamental mechanical problem — unsolved.

A tonearm drags through a groove. As the stylus tracks the record, it generates oscillating forces — drag, chatter, torque — that no traditional bearing design fully controls. The result is microscopic timing errors, scrubbing, coloration. The kind of artifact that hides in plain sound and gets called character. The best tonearms in the world had learned to manage it. None of them had fixed it.

Richard (the founder of SUPATRAC) fixed it.

The Sideways Uni-Pivot Arm — SUPA — is a UK-patented bearing that pivots sideways, not up-down, at a single contact point that directly opposes stylus drag. Instead of fighting the groove's forces or being deflected by them, the SUPA bearing harnesses them. Loud passages that would cause traditional arms to momentarily lose groove contact? The SUPA bearing converts that burst of drag into a slight downward torque — pressing the stylus in, harder, at exactly the right moment. SUPATRAC calls it Torque-Reaction Assisted Contact (TRAC). What you hear is music that plays hotter, cleaner, and more completely than anything you've heard from a pivoted arm before.

Mark Döhmann — one of the world's most respected analogue minds — heard it and said: "It solves fundamental problems in tone-arm design which none of us has been able to fix for the last fifty years." Michael Fremer described the experience as "like watching a star athlete make the impossible look easy." Robert Harley of The Absolute Sound reported "stunning realistic portrayal of instrumental timbre, dynamics, imaging." Roy Gregory called it "a musical bargain of monumental proportions." These are not people who say things like this.

SUPATRAC makes two tonearms. The Blackbird — the arm that started the conversation, winner of The Absolute Sound's 2024 Golden Ear Award — and the Nighthawk, which takes the SUPA concept further with a larger pillar, more rigid pivot, and even greater tracking authority for the most demanding cartridges.
